Children's ministry assistant (Part-time)

Position Title:  Children's Ministry Assistant

Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church is a Christ-centered community of faith in the heart of Uptown Greenville, NC.  Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Jarvis Memorial UMC is searching for a part-time Children's Ministry Assistant.   He or she will support the Director of Children's Ministry in growing the children's program at Jarvis Memorial UMC.  They will be a constant and loving influence in the lives of children by helping lead Sunday School and other ongoing ministries in conjunction with the teachings of the United Methodist Church.

We are seeking a passionate individual who is called to ministry with children kindergarten through fifth grade with the following attributes:
  • Strong positive experience in the church
  • Musical skills or a familiarity with incorporating music in ministry
  • Should possess a high school diploma or pursuing a degree from an accredited college, university.

Organist/Accompanist (Part Time)

The Organist/Accompanist is the primary organist/accompanist for Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, Greenville, NC. The person in this position will make a significant contribution to the musical life of the church, will embrace the relational aspect that naturally evolves as a member of the worship team and staff, and is viewed as an integral part of the overall music ministry and church community.

Ministry Purpose:
To work with the Director of Music and the worship team in providing musical selections and accompaniments that complement and enhance worship services throughout the year.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance or equivalent experience, Master’s preferred
  • Strong background in liturgical music
  • Advanced proficiency in both organ and piano
  • Advanced sight reading skills, including open score
  • Ability to play a wide variety of musical styles
  • Ability to run sectional rehearsals
  • Ability to lead the Sanctuary and/or Chancel Choir in the director’s absence
  • Familiarity with Methodist hymnody preferred
  • Organization and communication skills
  • Emotional and spiritual maturity to effectively work with people regardless of age, race, culture, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity expression, family configuration, physical ability, citizenship, language, or socioeconomic status
  • A faith that allows for musical ability and giftedness to be seen as a ministry in Jesus Christ

  • Provide music for traditional 8:00 AM* and 11:00 a.m. Sunday service, including hymns, prelude, postlude, communion, and meditative music
  • Accompany the adult Chancel Choir and Sanctuary Choir* at weekly rehearsals and at Sunday service(s).
  • Accompany soloists and special music throughout the church year
  • Provide music for holiday worship services throughout the liturgical year, including Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter
  • Provide music for special events
  • Work with Director of Music in selecting relevant hymns and service music for traditional service and seasonal worship experiences
  • Assist the Director of Music in the maintenance of all instruments, including pianos, organ, console, and pipe chamber
  • Maintain organ and piano music libraries
  • Establish regular rehearsal times in the sanctuary in conjunction with the church schedule
  • Preferred ability to secure qualified substitute as needed
  • Attend meetings as requested
  • Right of first refusal for weddings and funerals (additional stipend provided)
  • Additional or diminished responsibilities as determined by Director of Music, Staff Parish Relations Committee and Senior Pastor
  • Currently the 8:00 AM Sunday morning service and Sanctuary Choir is on hiatus and may or may not be implemented again in the future

Primary Instruments:  About the Organs
The Robert Rives Taylor pipe organ was originally installed by the Tellers Pipe Organ Company of Erie, Pa., in 1958. The organ was restored and enlarged by Bob Lent of Shenandoah Organ Studio in Lyndhurst, Va., in 2006. The main organ, located at the front of the sanctuary, has 43 ranks, and the antiphonal organ, which also serves as the chapel organ, adjacent to the sanctuary, has six ranks.
